So my computer blew up (not technically.. But it no longer wants to work) . I am currently updating this on my iPhone... But typin out anything of substance isnt really practical on this thing. So I just want to say I may be m.I.a shortly. I wanted to share some doggysitting adventures with you and the cupcakes I am makin tonight for my sisters birthday... But they will have to wait! Hope everyone is having a good week... Mines been hectic and stressful/frustrating at times so I'm really looking forward to the bday celebrations tomorrow for my Sis!

i just finished this tattoo up on saturday. since the client could only sit for an hour or so at a time it's taken a few sessions... but it's done for now. until she's ready for some shadow in behind!

it was gorgeous out yesterday, and my sister and i went to a bridal show. it wasn't what we were expecting. i remember going to one with her years ago, and it was done so well... lots of freebies, and lots of snacking food and tea/coffee. these are the reasons we go to these kinds of things! oh, and door prizes of course.
yesterday i won a doorprize alright! it was a gift certificate scribbled in pen on a piece of paper for a place i've never heard of. even the guy videoing the show leaned in and told me there has been nothing but really negative reviews online about the place i won the prize from! haha. we also think the grand door prize for a honeymoon isn't even real! and we even heard the people sitting behind us whisper "this is the most ghetto bridal show ever".
oh well. maybe we will hit up the big fancy one in january. before the bridal show we went to a flea market and i heard the worst 'compliment' of my life. creepo! i even had to awkwardly say 'alright.. that's enough'

anyway we tried to classy up the day by topping it off by going to Moxie's for dinner.. which seemed to help. except i forgot to take my "bride" nametag off i looked crazy! brides are crazy people! not all of you ;) but what we are planning is so low key and laid back and DIY it's just funny to see how crazy other people are about all that stuff. o well, to each their own!

i'm off to get some things done with the last bit of my 'weekend'... and i will also be doggysitting as of this evening!! so excited to have a (pseudo)dog again.. even if it is just for a week :)

breakfast! i made cream cheese w/ choc. chips stuffed french toast with strawberries and bacon mmmmm so good i just might make it again today :)

my future mother-in-law gave me tickets to the big home show this weekend so my sister and i went. it was ok, but i don't own my own asphalt driveway and i can't afford any of the giant spaceship-like hot tubs. But then... we heard it. an announcement about a free cheese seminar! starting in 10 mins... the last one of the weekend. hahahaha... we found it immediately and took our seats

we were very excited and it was pretty awesome. you could even tell all the people walking by in the home show were jealous :P we taste tested 6 different kinds of cheese with bagettes, and they explained how to really get the full tastes out of them, and also how to pair them. you can freeze cheese! and it won't affect it at all. and we learned lots of other stuff.. and got cheese notepads, and a pizza cutter and cheese picks if you are serving your own selection. and my sister won us little ovenmitts!

yes we are giant nerds. one time while driving back from montreal last summer, my sister was asleep in the passenger seat and i knew of a small potato chip factory tour coming up at one of the exits. i pulled in and when she woke up.. it was like christmas morning! her husband just went back to sleep in the backseat... but my sister and i went in to do the chip tour! it was only $6 and you got to watch them make their kettle chips, and you got a bag right from the factory workers out of the batch they were making. we watched little videos about potatoes hahaha and then the best part we got to take our kettle chips and go try out all kinds of seasonings. i made my own mix of 'mac & cheese' with 'hickory bacon'. it was so delicious.

in spring of '09 we also went and did a tour of a maple syrup sugar shack with an all you can eat pancake brunch!

Anyway... we LOVE FOOD! is basically the point of all of that. ha. back to the rest of my day yesterday:

people surf all winter in nova scotia. (you probably can't see them at the point in the distance). i have never been winter surfing because i turn purple even if it's too cold in the middle of summer and sometimes i can't get warmed up after the ocean then! i can't imagine coming out of the water in our winter weather.

i've been spoiled with surfing in california and tofino and yes, i know how snobby that sounds! ... the only time i tried surfing here in NS it was really hard! the conditions were not as friendly haha. also, i should probably stop taking pictures while driving

i absolutely love this granny square bunting:D the colors are so great and it's sooo soft. i immediately hung it up in my art room.

i opened it as soon as i got in the door and didn't even take my jacket off... but turns out the headband she made matches my jacket zipper exactly. i am trying to point that out in the following photo ..

So much for springlike weather yesterday... today we have a nice mix of freezing rain/ice pellets and crazy winds. and hearing it hitting the windows makes it really chilly in here!

i just wanted to share a little picture i took yesterday of my now favorite antique/junk store. this is just half of my favorite room in the place. there are lots of rooms!

love my stuff! (it's from texas if you couldn't tell) i'm not sure how well you can see the paperweight in the picture(it is a paperweight right?).. i don't curse so i've been telling people at work that i got some texas bull-crap in the mail. which i'm sure makes no sense to anyone until i explain the whole swap ;) and i actually love the bookmark and don't think it's tacky at all.. and think it will be an excellent replacement for the Swiss Chalet 2-for-1 dinner expired coupon that is now acting as my current bookmark. i feel like my mom always wanted an armadillo. maybe i made that up though. i used to have a hedgehog! but that's not the same thing :/
we have a big collection of postcards so i'm excited for that too, i'll add it to the pile until we know what to do with them all.

i ended up getting an awesome pyrex dish that i won't share in case my sister see's this - it's part of her birthday present!. but i did pick this 'Glasbake' bowl up for her today, along with these pyrex burnt orange mugs for about $7 altogether from 2 different stores.

I got two bowls for myself on PEI from a flea market/junk shop. i don't know the brand of this little one but i loved the color and the little images on it.

the other bowl i got myself there, is that turquoise pyrex bowl off to the side in this picture ... but i also got these awesome turquoise pyrex dishes today! they just match the bowl so well! (i love turquoise)

oh and just so my fiance doesn't feel left out i got him this haha

it's still cold out... doesn't it know it's spring out yet??

i haven't disappeared .... just got back from a much needed weekend away on PEI visiting friends :) i've had friends that have lived on the island now for years. and it's always a nice little getaway.
weekend included trying on wedding dresses, having our tarot cards read, late night nightmare inducing curry dinner, diner breakfast and hitting up a couple cool antique shops! i'm exhausted from the trip :) and somehow the only 3 hour drive managed to take about 4 hours each time? go figure. if you don't know what/where PEI is (Prince Edward Island).. it may seem familiar to you from Regis & Kelly.. they did a week of shows there last summer! it's known for it's red sand, super warm beaches and of course potatoes. what is really funny is that one time when i was there i actually won a 50lb bag of potatoes at the race track/casino hahaha. it was pretty awesome.

anyway.. it's nice to be back home and the cat is happy i'm back a day early! i just took a couple pictures on my iphone but i will post them tomorrow. hope everyone else had a friend filled refreshing/relaxing weekend as well. i know mine was overdue!

(this was me last year)

last year we weren't planning on doing anything for st patrick's day but my fiance was having some drinks with his brother before his brother had to go downtown to meet his wife and their friends for celebrations. i came home from work, got in on the whiskey drinking with them and after listening to a bunch of Pogues somehow we all made our way downtown to my old stomping grounds. i guess we just got in the spirit! one of the best irish pubs in halfiax (and trust me we have quite a few!) was the bar for the art school i used to go to. (i even used my 7 year old expired student id and still got in for free! ha!) we're not really big on going out anymore but it was super fun! and we were still home at like 11:30 haha. but anyway, we all have irish in us, but are probably more scottish then anything. we kept yelling HAPPY SAINT SHAMUS day.. which drunkenly turned into Happy Shaint Samus day!

i'm going to stereotypically throw on the pogues and have a beer while i clean then work on some drawings while i watch weekend at bernies ;)

after doing the what's in my bag post the other day... and after my sister and i geeked out on pyrex pictures online last night i decided to post some pictures of "what's in my pantry!" i said that like a gameshow host in my head.

i apologize for the picture quality, i took these with my iphone and it was late last night, so we have the flash battling the beautiful tungsten glow. barf! (not to mention the walls/shelves are all yellow too ha!)

k these last two aren't in the pantry but are out on the actual kitchen counter because they are used all the time :) so i cheated

so i realized i didn't take a 'before' picture. but picture a plain room with a bunch of mismatched paintings. it's our spare bedroom, so we never really did a whole lot with it. bed, lamp, bookcase, and a place to put some extra paintings...

then last night i followed this tutorial and made a headboard for the spare room! i got some cool fabric (a pillowcase and matching sheet) at a second hand store yesterday. after washing them, i cut the pillow case down the sides and opened it up, and using the starch mix in the tutorial i applied it to the wall. it was too much material to stay up on it's own at first so i ended up having to cut it in half then match them up on the wall again. then i just cut out a giant circle from the matching sheet, stretched it in a big embroidering hoop and hung that on the opposite wall with a cool old mirror my mom found for me, and a painting of mine in a complimentary color. i think it makes it a little cozier in there :)(i also starched the koi fish paper onto the wall up there, which i wasn't sure would work or not. it did, and it's still there this morning!)

What's In My Bag(s)

Two bags worth of random junk!

So it's friday night and i figured hey, what better thing to do then take pictures of all the junk in my bag(s)! i was actually home sick today and have a super full day at work tomorrow so i am trying to take it easy. that's how i'm justifying this.

So most days i have two bags (at least). and one not shown here which i use as a camera bag/purse, but i move all the junk out of my real purse into my purse/camera bag when i take it to work. because i need my camera at work (my beautiful Canon Rebel T1i not shown :). and i put that whole bag (along with my lunchbag) into that brown owl bag along with more junk to take to work! follow me? yea basically just tons of crap to carry around! or i will even put my camerabag/purse into my backpack with my laptop and take even more junk! is anyone else's 'what's in my bag' post this in depth?

if i'm just going out on my own for fun i take this red plaid purse if i don't think i'll need/want my big ol' camera.

above is my regular purse. we have a coupon, a bandaid with the baby dinosaur from that show Dinosaurs. (remember 'not the mama!' ?? don't ask me why i still have this thing?), plasitc bacon, crumpled receipt, concert ticket, swiss army knife (what gal doesn't have one of these? ha), lighter even though i don't smoke, burt's bees lip balm, a rock that i got from the a crazy fossil place -i think it looks like a t-rex head, business card holder + my pinup girl business cards, notepad, pencil, pen, and my iphone + cozy (from Chrissy!)

i forgot my wallet was up on the organ/piano when i took the pics, so i'm adding these in. always have to have my wallet, sunglasses and keys!

now in the owl bag we currently have:

pencil crayons, a sketchbook/notepad, my daily planner for appointments with a receipt book, honey roasted peanuts, fake elastic pearl bracelets, extra leads and erasers, bacon flavored toothpicks, i heart NY mints, a tattoo supply flyer, and oddly enough THREE spoons! that's kind of embarrassing?

well there you have it. if you know that people call me 'safety' then it makes sense that i have a swiss army knife and a lighter in there. just cause you never know! apparently i think i could get stranded somewhere at any given time and feel secure knowing that i could survive with these haha. actually not only do people call me safety but people at work have been known to call me 'safety bacon' because of my love of bacon. which i suppose explains the toothpicks and the little plastic bacon! i probably shouldn't even mention that i have a bacon tattoo!

and of course any time you put anything on the floor the cat thinks it's for her!

Morning Noon & Night

so the name change for my blog came about well, because i didn't like the other one. i found it almost confusing. and it kind of sounded like a sunny day real estate song title. anyway! i saw something the other day about a book called Morning Noon & Night on amazon and the wording hit home with me, as it's a phrase i say daily. when i'm telling my tattoo clients about aftercare i tell them to wash their tattoos 3 times a day - morning, noon & night. it's become part of this spiel that i just automatically go into. so as soon as i saw that i thought it'd be the perfect name for here. i also love mornings (when i'm on my own time, and not forced to get up for some reason), noon's ok i guess and i love the nighttime!

above is a tattoo i did on my friend dan. he gets pretty random stuff so it's always nice and refreshing. whenever i'm getting a super random tattoo ready (big wheel, banana, etc) it usually belongs to either him or this client posted below with the "see you in the funny papers" quote!

(i don't curse) funny enough a girl was getting tattooed today and after talking about cursing and not cursing she started yelling 'Parsley!' instead of the F word for my sake haha -i really don't mind if people curse at all, i mean i'm marrying a sailor people, i think i'm used to it;) i just sound ridiculous when/if i do and people just laugh cause they're not used to hearing it from me. either that or you've just made me reaaalllly angry!

check out these delicious croissants from Two If By Sea mmmm. this was their croissant of the week (last week). Raspberry compote and cream cheese filling! and if you can't tell by the picture with my sunglasses for reference, these suckers are huge! we ate them all day long.
this is Lincoln. he was here for a puppy sleepover last weekend!

my sister and i tried a different/newish sushi place downtown and it was AWESOME. this is the volcano roll we got and i think there was even stuff in it that i didn't care for but the whole thing altogether was delicious and all deep friend.

and lastly we have a picture from about two weeks ago with me and my best friend who was in town for that weekend. it is a picture of a picture on our friends camera of us karaokeing!

it's funny because there was a crew of us who used to all go to this same place every sunday night back in university days. so we thought it would be funny to go while she was around. we sat down and when asked what we'd like to drink i asked 'Do you guys still have Molson Ex on tap?' and the guy laughed and said 'Not for about 8 years now' to which i replied, 'ya that sounds about right!' hahahha WE'RE OLD!
anyway we had fun, and we butchered Cecilia and Maggie May. guess we had something for girl name titled songs? huh!

Oh!! and i am going to change the name of this blog. the url was the theme for my Sketchbook Project (which will be at the Austin Museum of Modern Art this Saturday during the SXSW festival... if anybody's in texas!). And that's fine, but i was never fond of the title i gave it. it's like you have to stop and think about it as you say it. I got a good one though and i wanted something that i could carry over if i ever make an etsy shop. so they could be the same thing. and it scares me to make an etsy shop because the first thing i heard is that you can't change the name of your shop! and so it better be good! i'm obviously bad with commitments.

i think i'll get around to posting some pics of my art room/studio cause i also just got an ugly cheesy globe lamp for in there! and seeing chrissy's 'what's in my bag' post has reminded me that i was going to do one of these a while ago and just forgot about it. so there you have it, i may actually be doing some posting this week!

so, wow, i've been super busy lately! a lot has gone on in the past week but i'm not going to talk about it here. just cause. but anyway.. i have good reason to be distracted, but everything is cool. work has picked up a ton, and i think i have to thank tax season for that because maybe people have a little extra cash right about now, and they want to spend it on themselves! ie tattoos!
i've also just been keeping busy and almost sorta kinda having a bit of a social life.. go figure? C'monnnnn spring!
i used to make weird awkward video blogs for my facebook tattoo fan page for some reason (boredom?) and i've been seeing these vlog dialect things all over so i figured i'd give it a shot. sometimes it can be weird to break the 3rd wall? is that a thing? you know like in drama class.. maybe it's the 4th wall? anyway... it can be weird to see more then what you're used to sometimes. like sitting too close at the ballet(that was a reference from the show Blossom that has stuck with me for some reason!?), or seeing an actor in real life, or a video of someone you're used to only seeing pictures of! or for that matter ewww, seeing your coworkers toes. weird!

sketchbook tour!

i received an email last week telling me the art house co-op got my sketchbook! the sketchbook tour has started and is now on view at the Brooklyn Art Library. there are plenty of stops all through the US... i didn't get around to doing as much as i would have liked in my sketchbook but i'm still very proud to be a part of this project!

i thought i had more to say, but i'm sitting here yawning my face off! i've been really busy working lately. and when i get home i feel like it's too cold to do anything! i got in the tub to warm up, but now i'm just going to go to bed with wet hair. should be interesting in the morning.

things to do as soon as it's not so freezing: 1)paint, 2)start a zombie cross-stitch (anyone who knows i embroider always think it's cross-stitching... i have never cross-stitched anything in my life!) from a kit i got with 12 different patterns (but i'm scared of zombies, so we'll see how this goes), and 3)i'd love to try this starched fabic wall stuff! seriously.. check out this link, it looks super easy. i did see it done somewhere else on another blog, but sometimes i get to reading and clicking links i don't know where i am or how i ended up where i did. i was smart enough to at least bookmark this one!

i think i may try a small headboard for the bed in our spare room, if i get a chance on monday (my day off) i'm going to find a cool old second hand sheet to use just for this :)

odd story after the owl tattoo!

hi there all. this is my friday night. and i think i want to spend it painting. or maybe just watching a movie because that involves less work, and right now, i'm kind of tired/lazy.
i took a quick stop by For The Love Of Blogs and added my blog to the list... if you're looking for some to check out there are plenty! (i'm #100!)

So a crazy thing happened just yesterday right in front of our tattoo shop. An SUV was hit pretty hard by a city bus, spinning it 360 degrees. I immediately ran over as our shop girl called 911. I was asking the driver of the SUV if she was alright, etc (she was thankfully alright!) to which she quietly replied 'hey.... I know you?' It was the very lady who I had just done that owl tattoo on! (previous post) I couldn't believe it!

after the fire truck arrived and all the police, her daughter showed up and they went off in the ambulance and i was asked to take pictures of the truck. i received an email from the daughter and she told me that her mother (and my artwork) were just fine, except for 5 stitches on the back of the neck and expecting to be pretty achy for the next while. thank god she was alright, i was so worried, i felt really connected to the whole thing in a weird way and wanted to do something!

so now if that wasn't odd enough... a client I worked on just today asked if we'd seen the accident yesterday, to which I explained the story above. she then told us that she was a passenger on the bus when it had hit the suv! Anyway.. everyone is fine but it is sure feeling like a small world right now.

i did this owl tattoo yesterday for a client who just lost her husband last month :( apparently he was a collector of all things owls, so i think it was a good match when she asked me to do the tattoo for her. i told her i was well on my way to being the crazy old owl lady... my house is slowly becoming filled with weird random owl things! it was honor to do it, and help her keep a piece of her husband with her. those are even his initials we scanned from something he signed for :)

hey did i mention that all that stuff i bought in my last post all came to about $14??

so we didn't do anything crazy valentine's day... just hung out, watched a movie and were really nice to each other! exchanged some sweets and i baked some chocolate chip cookies and monkey balls (my fiance's choice -also, still weird to say fiance, i always want to type finance). monkey balls (pictured above) are a peanut buttery ball with coconut... we got his grandmothers recipe and i was kind of afraid they wouldn't be as good, cause, well, she's his grandmother! anyway, they turned out pretty good.. and i made enough chocolate chip cookies to last until next valentines day so that's good.

we're not super mushy, but we just set v-day aside for quality hanging out time and i implemented a no screen in your face evening. ie, no iphones or laptops! we were also lazy and didn't want to bother making a big meal so we relied on our good ol' fallback food - kraft dinner! (also what we ate after he proposed ha!). although it was pretty cute to see he made my KD into a heart. then we watched Get Him To The Greek. pretty good valentines day if you ask me!

"fiance" texted to let me know my wedding dress came in the mail today (thank you ebay!) i'm excited although i'm completely prepared for it to not fit. so i'll see if it's close enough to mess around with or just move on to something else. i just loved it so much i didn't want to be wondering. let me know if you are looking for an awesome unique wedding dress i may be relisting it on ebay haha! it's not like i don't have tons of time to find another dress. i'm so excited i want to leave work and go home to try it on! look at me, i'm a girl! my best friend will be in town this weekend to pick up her wedding dress.. we are both standing in each others weddings.. so i'm sure this will be a girly overload weekend, but i'm kind of looking forward to it!
{speaking of weddings, you can't really be anywhere on the internet right now and type 'wedding' without BHLDN being shoved down your throat! the stuff is nice, but maybe i'm just a cheapo.. i'm sorry but i'd rather use the $$$ i'd spend on that stuff to go towards our house downpayment or a honeymoon! or you know, groceries} i just found that funny because i just posted about eating KRAFT DINNER. living the high life over here haha!

i guess i'll get back to working on some drawings now, excuse the rant!

i'm having a busy week! which is good. but busy. (except for monday!)
. i realized i like seeing what other people pick up at thrift stores and flea markets so i'm going to share a few pictures of what i picked up on monday. i had the whole day all to myself and it was gorgeous out. i wandered around to a couple of places then lazed around. ahh it was nice. no i did not pick up that cat. she lives here. that knitted throw, however, i did buy.

so since we now have a wedding to start saving for, and have been saving for a house (among other things) i decided it was time to make the d.i.y. budget planner i saw over at ballpoint + pen! you can follow her tutorial if you click on the link. it's pretty straight forward but mine just looks kind of ghetto and you can get a better idea on her blog. i had some green fabric from a shirt i've been using for embroidering projects, that i glued to a piece of cardboard from a cheerios box. and i had this awesome owl paper kicking around.

i will also just include a couple more fondue photos because hey, it was chocolate fondue this time!

i bought some awesome things at some thrift stores today! had the whole day to myself and it was +2 and sunny! got some nice old pillowcases to cut up and embroider on, and a lovely peacock plate! i'll take some pictures after everything's clean and post em later. i also bought some new pliers that i've been meaning to get for over a week! (not as exciting)
don't hate me for it, but i love monday's :D

my other winning from Pamplemousse's giveaway came in the mail today! thanks so much to Chrissy from Chrissy In America for my awesome iphone cozy! oddly enough i won the giveaway the same night i broke down and bought an iphone joining the the rest of the world here in the future. go figure! you can check out her etsy shop here where she sells these little soft felt cozies, and other handmade goodies. she even made me an owl one :)

man, little things like this totally make my day. i love fun stuff in the mail! everything i've been waiting for in the mail has now come though, except for our hacksaw jim duggan wrestler from ebay. he's second choice to macho man who got lost somewhere in the mail so we got him with the returned $. we need a forth to have tag teams! poor jake the snake has been all alone against roddy piper and the ultimate warrior!

i found the old WWF ring in the garbage near work one day last spring.. in the garbage! it wasn't until just after christmas did we finally get some wrestlers for it. and needless to say they made quite the first impression. they attacked our gingerbread house!

so tuesday i stayed home because i was bummed about my budgie passing away. yesterday we were only at the shop for half the day because the giant snowstorm was coming. we got quite a bit of snow, but nothing major. although around here for some reason people still aren't used to getting any real amount of snow. 20cms of snow?! people act like it doesn't happen all the time. anyway... it's really nice outside today but because this city is kinda nuts a lot of places are closed for the day (post storm!). if it's a snow day at school then i guess a lot of parents probably have to take snow days off too. i'm not in school, and i'm not a parent, but i'm still taking a snow day!!
yay to being able to work from home! i had no tattoo appts today at the shop anyway, and i prepared by taking my drawings home with me yesterday after lunch. so today i am working on a drawing for tomorrow and getting my saturday appt drawings ready to go. the black & grey tattoo books i just won/received in the mail are going to come in handy today for inspiration and reference! i am going to be working on a black & grey 1/2 sleeve of a chickadee, a soft mountain in the background and a main component of apple blossoms. looking forward to it! {i've also been searching blogs for wedding inspiration... it's really addictive, and kind of frightening how much i'm getting into all the stupid little fun details even though we don't even have a date or venue nailed down ha! who knew i could be so girly?}

wirlwind of a weekend!

wow-ee. how was everybody's weekend? mine was pretty crazy!
sunday i got engaged! i've always been the 'marriage is just a piece of paper' kind of girl, and believe the goal of being together is to just be happy together. and the goal shouldn't be to 'be married'. but hey, why can't we be happy together, and get to have a fun party with our friends and family?? fiance is a little more official sounding then saying boyfriend and i kind of like that! it's so weird. like what's up with girls? how come i am turning into a girl all of a sudden? it's like that ring (that beautiful, beautiful ring) has given me wedding powers. i'm a superhero, except with weird wedding hormones all of a sudden. i guess it's kind of cute, and i'm really excited about the whole thing. after my boyfr.... fiance, proposed on sunday and the initial ridiculousness wore off, i was like 'what do we do now?' i guess we finish our hike and drive home! oh, and then spend all day and the whole next day on the phone and emailing people. it's exhausting. and so much for keeping this blog not-so-personal! wooops!

lots more grown up-y things happened this weekend like having awesome beer/cheddar/bacon fondue at my sisters sat night, mmmm

and like getting engaged and dropping my ring off to be sized down a tiny bit. and i even got in a quick visit with my friend and her 2 week old baby!

my sister and i went to some thrift stores and i got this awesome painting at the salvation army. i like how it's fall and wintertime

also my tattoo books came in the mail yesterday... they weigh 22 lbs! (over twice the weight of that baby up there!) they are amazing and i want to thank everyone for voting for me in the Tattooed People and Their Pets contest.

It is very sad, however, to note that Barley my budgie who was in the winning picture along with Puss our cat, passed away yesterday. he had cancer and it got really bad so we did the unselfish thing and had him put down. Selfless, yes. Very hard to do? Yes! i was really sad.. and was even more sad this morning when i went to go wake him up for the day (by taking the sarong off his cage). I know he's better off now... but boy was he a little trooper! here he is :)

I forgot to mention this! a few of the blogs i follow have linked to this. it's a Tacky Souvenir Swap!! i signed up right away... who doesn't love getting mail, plus it's awesome because you'll be getting something ridiculous from somewhere you probably haven't been. and you get to go to a stupid little dinky souvenir shop in your own town/city to get something tacky for someone else (who you don't even know!). how often do you take the time to look at your own cities tackiness? i'm sure i'll have lots of lobster or fishman magnets to pick from. or maybe one of those hats with the fake seagull poop! yesssss!

so this is more like it halifax! this is normally our winter weather here... not that -18 i showed you in the last post. this was my walk to work yesterday morning. frozen slushy snow/rain and big ol' puddles. all my shoes/boots suck, so the only waterproof things for my feet are my rubber boots, but it was also cold so i had to put on like 3 pairs of socks. way to go maritimes! (notice the coat hanger in the giant slush puddle blocking my way onto the sidewalk) alright!

so anyway, i've had a lucky past couple of weeks. i won the Tattooed People and Their Pets contest on tattooroadtrip, and am anxiously awaiting my 3 volume Black & Grey Tattoo books. and i also won a blog giveaway on pamplemousse1983! the giveaway included two things, and i got the first in the mail today! (i love getting stuff in the mail:) it's this necklace

from this girl. sorry, her blog and etsy shop used to be named moon asking to stay, but i guess she just had to change everything. either way, i love my new necklace!
i'm also anxiously awaiting a little something for my new iphone! i will post about it when it comes in the mail!

so needless to say i went out and bought a couple of lottery tickets :) i already lost on one, but the other one is tonight. so i'll probably be a millionaire tomorrow. nice!

oh for breakfast today i made myself some peanut butter pancakes, with chocolate chips and little bits of granola in them mmmm. then i cut up some banana to go on top. they were delicious and the softest pancakes i've had in a long time. i think it's been all this man vs. food we've been watching lately!! it's getting to me

do you want to see what -18 C looks like? (that's like 0, or -1 F for all you Americans) ... these pictures look so cold you can almost feel it

thankfully i didn't have to work yesterday... it was freezing out there!! although i still worked... i just did it from the comfort of my own home :) and since my bf got home early we went for a long drive. there was blowing snow and a weird foggy haze that made everything look kind of ghostly. the days started off at -18, then the car told us it was -14 while we were out and i checked the weather and it said it was about -24 with the windchill! yuck! we're not really used to getting that here in halifax. it's usually just kinda cold and damp. living on the ocean will do that. i walked to the tattoo shop this morning and my 15 min walk felt like it took forever as the condensation building on the scarf wrapped around my mouth/nose froze. *shutter*. i don't have any appts booked for the day, and i doubt in weather like this i'll have any walk-ins.

see this self-employed stuff has it's ups and downs. like i mentioned i worked from home yesterday. finished a commissioned painting for someone! i do have full days off, but even on those days i'm still thinking about work or upcoming appts, or drawing for them, or painting, or editing photos on my computer, etc. and it's nice to almost feel like i can come and go as i need to, like when the tattoo shop is slow (like right before and after christmas ie, now.) but the bottom line is if i'm not 'working', i don't get paid! i've never had the luxury of a paid vacation. a vacation is something i really have to work hard for leading up to, and afterward to make up for my time off. so right now it's freezing, i'm at the shop working on a couple things, but the truth is i could be doing these things at home (in my warm pjs!), and working on other art stuff. but i need to be here in case some appointments walk in or call. sometimes i bring my embroidering stuff here with me, or i'll get work done on my website. but i think i just don't want to be doing anything in this kind of weather! tea and blankets and netflix would be alright with me!

i read back on feeling stitchy a couple of days ago about their flickr group showcasing pictures of embroidery thread. i don't feel like joining another site to put my pictures up there, but it got me thinking about taking a couple photos of my newly organized floss anyway!

my boyfriends mother gave me lots of crafty embroidery stuff for christmas, and his grandmother gave me some of her old floss that she just had kickin around. some of their little paper things say .33 cents at Woolworths (which hasn't been around here for a looongg time), and a better buy from somewhere else at only .29 cents. such nice colors too! i was inspired by the ease of using all my stuff that i even stitched up a little present for my friends very newborn baby! like as in born 3 days ago. (i'll post a pic after i give it to her)

this is looking inside my bottom drawer which is just for embroidery. you can see some stuff/pencil crayons one drawer up, and above that one is some paint. maybe i'll take some pictures of the rest of my art room/studio space and share em. i just re-arranged it because i finally bought a bookshelf to squeeze into the room. now i want more books!

and now just for fun (because i haven't been doing a whole lot at work lately, or anything done in one sitting, or worth posting) is a rose i did yesterday. it's simple but it covered up an old tattoo this client had that she hated. (old bf tattoo!)

i am having a weird time sleeping lately. let's see what tonight will bring. g'nite!

it's hard starting a new blog.. especially considering my old one goes back to who knows when. i started my original one on some site i can't even remember but when they shut it down (or started asking for money to blog there) i got myself a blogger blog (you're still cute when you scream, which i started back in March of '07 when I first got to California, that blog was a sequel to 'you are cute when you scream'). even that second one was hard to start and it was hard to accept my old one was gone. now i have this crafty one and i find it hard to want to work on it. but i'm sure i'll be glad that i did. i have a bad memory and love knowing that my travels and crazy randomness and artsy jobs have been logged in my other blog, it is almost a relief. so i will try to be better at this one!

i mailed off my sketchbook for the Art Co-Ops Sketchbook Project... and now we wait. (well, we wait... they sort throught 28,000 sketchbooks then drag them across the country for numerous art shows!) it wasn't quite finished.. ok, not at all.. but i blame making a bunch of stuff for the holidays. busy time to try to work on a sketchbook.

I've also started following a lot of other crafty blogs (i even just won a blog give-away!)and am getting lots of inspiration so i figured i'd like to join in and (hopefully) try to offer up some inspiration of my own. i have plans to start an etsy store (it's on my resolutions list!) and would like to start becoming more 'social' in the crafty interwebs. I have a lot of idea's for myself as far as tattooing goes, and painting, and all my little craft projects and it's great to see what lots of other people are out there doing!

mounted moosehead

here's the moosehead! he seemed to be a big hit.... for as much trouble as he was to make, it was all worth it in the end. (needlefelted moosehead, paper mache antlers, mounted on actual taxidermy plaque) ..and the look on my boyfriends face when he saw it above the mantel on christmas eve was priceless. I added a 'how to' on cut out & keep if you want to check out the progress from this 1-month sometimes-fun, sometimes-frustrating project: here

we like weird cheesy (/tacky?) things. if you couldn't tell! oddly enough after posting a link to feeling stitchy yesterday, i had finished up an embroidered coo coo clock tea towel for my mom for christmas. i got it all cleaned & ironed today and wrapped it up to send off with the other stuff for my folks and checked my crafty blogs today only to find they posted another version of wild olive's coo coo clock. right when i finished mine... weird! i changed it up a bit but i'll post mine here, because my mom will never see the internet. :)

this time last year we were all getting excited to head to new york right after christmas. it was a whirlwind leading up to it and christmas was fun but i think i was more excited for new york (we kept singing "in a new york minute".. but replace minute with jacket because we thought we had perfect new york wintertime jackets like in the movies. we didn't bother getting a tree or even decorating last year as my boyfriend had just gotten back in town after a year away and we spent christmas with our own separate familes then took off for the long drive to NY. while i don't have NY to look forward to this year, i do have a nice cozy settled christmas to look forward to which is pretty exciting actually. my past three christmas holidays have been so-so and maybe it's my own fault for having high expectations. and i must admit i did make the most of them. but either way, our place is decorated and cozy & i have no expectations or real plans this year. we're even going for a little rip to montreal over the holidays and maybe something special planned for new years if we have any money left after all this holiday craziness.

i have been getting crafty with my presents, embroidering and needlefelting some things for loved ones but i can't share them here until after christmas (so as not to ruin any surprises!) Last weekend before drinking some disgusting rum and eggnog while watching Christmas Daddies and decorating our tree, I went to the halifax crafters Winter Carnival Handmade Market. It was very impressive & inspiring, and i saw some really cool stuff i liked. I bought an awesome card from this guy and i got a cool glass for a friend from Kyla Francis.

I figured i'd share some of the little craft blogs that i like to browse through on a regular basis when i have the time or need some inspiration (or just feel like being nosey).
Feeling Stitchy was the first real crafty site i stumbled upon and has lead me to lots of cool blogs and patterns and just nerdy cool stuff.
one blog linked from there that i really like is wild olive and not just because of the name, she has awesome patterns and sometimes equally awesome pictures of food with recipes. and from there i make my way over to campfire chic and then I usually check out little dear tracks because she makes very cool stuff there, sometimes woodsy sort of things that i love. These blogs usually have free patterns and even giveaways and blog parties. i should also mention my friend johanna's blog Birds on a Wire. the way she writes, and her subject matter makes you feel cozy and appreciative, and it doesn't hurt your welcomed by a giant picture of pie when you get there! they all just seem familiar like a welcoming cyber community that want to have you join in and have fun. it brings out my inner nerdiness :)

... my Sketchbook Project shirt arrived yesterday! it's kind of big and with a little washing and drying i'm a little disappointed the american apparel shirt didn't really shrink a whole lot. oh well. i'm still wearing it today anyway! I only have about 3 or 4 pages started in my sketchbook and i don't like any of them. i have ideas of what i want to do in there but when i sit down to do anything i just sketch like i'm being forced to sketch. it's like when i went to art school, i remember in our foundation year drawing classes we'd be forced to draw an upsidedown chair or a crumpled piece of paper for like 3 hours and it made me not like drawing. i've always painted, but i'm glad that when i started tattooing it forced me to draw again. but those drawings are still influenced and inspired by others (the clients ideas). i think it's just a matter of me sitting down and getting to draw whatever i want. it doesn't scare me, i just can't think of what to draw!
to be honest i never thought i fit in at art school because i couldn’t allow myself the looseness and carefree approach i felt like a lot of other students took. i feel like i come at things more like i want to make them exact. i’m not a perfectionist but i want the images to all make sense when you see them, and i want to understand it and i want it to look like it’s supposed to look (like i see it through my eyes… you know, the right way, ha!). i can appreciate it when people make work that way… but i can’t imagine allowing myself the freedom to draw things as they aren’t, so to speak. i was always good at drawing what i saw, or if i had to copy anything, but i struggled when it came to coming up with something from my own imagination.

it all comes back to this conversation with my sister the other day where we were talking about high school. we right-minded people are supposed to be more creative, as i’m told and tend to favor less-exactness, you know processes that you can sort of weave your way through and results that are more subjective then anything. but to me, the clear beginning and the exactly mapped out route with the one and only final answer are way more appealing. that way there is no (second) guessing. so take math and English for example. even though i consider myself an “artist” and am left handed i just always loved math! There, i said it. my sister could bull$h!t her way through English essay answers whereas i hated trying to come up with summaries in my own words of other people’s ideas or thoughts (or facts). i love a good ol’ fashioned straight forward math equation: Here is the question; Give me the exact answer. now, does this make me less creative? i don’t think so. i think i just have OCD.

yay! my sketchbook arrived yesterday :) ...also, my lambswool cowichan birthday-present-to-myself sweater from aritzia arrived on the same day which is a little fitting as i keep thinking of my sketchbook as a warm cozy little hideaway with blankets and tea. (on a side note here: i am not girly, nor do i really care about clothes too much, but i'd be happy to never take this sweater off again. i love it and it has a horse pattern in it which reminds me of my papa and his old wool sweaters :) Anyway, i forgot to take the sketchbook to work today, and it's slow here, so i'll just blog about it instead of doing anything in it. one thing i read about these moleskin sketchbooks is that people were complaining the pages were very thin. the paper feels awesome, but yes, they're thin! maybe too thin for what i have in mind so i might double up on my pages, which would essentially cut my book by half. but that's ok.

i have so many projects i feel like i'm in the middle of right now, and ones that i have to start for the holidays coming up so this might just be the escape/distraction that i need. that's what i do, you see instead of tackling one little thing on a giant list i just do something else until i can take a big chunk off the list all at once. i get more pleasure that way instead of only seeing small progress. either way, it'll all get done! commissioned paintings for the holidays, needlefelting/paper mache project, and embroidered holiday presents to finish.

speaking of holidays our 'holiday parade of lights' is this saturday evening! and yes, i'm already excited to wear my new sweater there. nerd!

it's been quite a while since i've blogged regularly and sometimes i miss it. i seem to be taking on some new exciting projects so i figured i'd start them some kind of a home for me to keep tabs on them, and watch them grow. it's simple math really.... bad memory + good camera = visual journaling.

i am (im)patiently waiting for my sketchbook to arrive from brooklyn ny so i can transform it before it starts it's journey. you see i signed up to be a part of a huge traveling art show involving thousands of sketchbooks! they will be exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on tour across the states with shows in cities such as Brooklyn Ny, San Francisco CA, Austin Tx, and Chicago Il to name a few!

my theme which is 'jackets, blankets, and sheets' was chosen randomly for me. i am too indecisive to pick things like that. but i actually love my theme and although it is only a starting off point i think it goes nicely with my new found love of embroidering. this theme makes me feel cozy. like i want to build a fort. so i think that's the direction i'm going to go in... thinking of being wrapped up in blankets with tea, or sitting by a fire with an oversized jacket on in autumn or climbing into bed between some comfy fresh sheets. can't wait to get started!!
